Sketchbook: Reasearch and Development

My moleskin is an organized mess of fabric, ribbon, leather, and lace. Bits of inspiration, dye tests, and colour stories, are all written down in my book for ideas I'm considering. I guess you can tell I really like pinks and blacks. That wasn't always the case though; I grew up hating the color pink. It was also the color of my room which I repainted when I was old enough.

Something tells me I need to get a new moleskin. It's already exploding at the seams!

Perhaps its the lack of Asian role models in mainstream culture or the fact that I was born Canadian that has attributed to the disconnect of my Asian heritage. Traveling to Hong Kong and Southeast Asia last year has proven otherwise...

Finding my roots has become an important journey for me, one that I hope will take me back to my family's origins in China. If the small town still exists today.

As we enter the year of the Dragon, I wish you success and prosperity. I hope you will continue to follow my visual inspiration and personal exploration on this blog. There will be more travels and adventures in the year ahead.

Chinese New Year

Chinese New Year is like the Asian version of Thanksgiving, except you chow down on Chinese food and exchange red lucky envelopes. Or at least that is how we celebrated it in our family. Usually there's an overabundance of mooncakes that don't taste very good and Asian snacks littering the house.

How am I celebrating this year? Cocktails and dim sum of course. Happy Chinese New Year!

The sun was setting on New Year's eve just as we touched down into Phoenix, Arizona. The weather has been good to us; we've been greeted by warmth and clear skies all week. Just a short break to spend time with the bf's family, it's been an enjoyable few days away from wintery Montreal.

We headed to Camelback Mountain for a short hike. It's a spectacular view of red rocks overlooking the valley.

Singapore: Top 5 Things To Do

I arrived in Singapore unprepared for the hot and humid weather. Packing my suitcase at 3am on the eve of Christmas, I forgot to check the weather forecast. Earlier that day, I was enjoying holiday dinner with family, then catching a drink with a good friend of mine in downtown Vancouver, so I barely had time to rest.

Singapore reminds me of a futuristic city. It's inhabited with a mix of Indians, Malays, and Chinese. Everything is clean, high-tech, air-conditioned and within close proximity to a mall. Please don't try chewing gum or littering here as you might end up in jail.

My five days here were spent seeking out the unique, local, and undiscovered spots around Singapore.

Here are my highlights of Singapore:

1. Haji Lane - the colorful shops and indie designers make this a favorite place of mine. I enjoyed checking out Soon Lee for their edited collection of clothing and Pluck for their homemade ice cream. Try the Lychee martini ice cream made with real alcohol.

2. Chinatown - Brightly colored and lined with red lanterns, I ventured around one of the cleanest Chinatowns I've been to. I found some small trinkets and lucky knots along the way.

3. Little India - I found a bountiful selection of ready made saris, and summer dresses in the Tekka market. The Mustafa Center nearby is a 24 hour shopping center and was too overwhelming for me. You could get lost here.

4. Dining at Kilo - A recommendation from Tony, we decided to try this little joint featured on the Layover. It was a place where no taxi driver was familiar with and located on the 2nd level of an apartment building. The food was simple and uncomplicated. The ambiance reminded me of a little resto in NYC. Definitely a hidden gem.

5. Hawker Stalls - Finding cheap and good food in Singapore is easy, especially with the abundance of Hawker Stalls. You can find anything from noodle soup, grilled satay and local cuisine.

Most of my Christmases are unconventional. When your family lives on the west coast and your sister subscribes to California weather, it's hard to coordinate holiday plans.

Two years ago, we had our family reunion in the crazy town of Las Vegas. This year, my Christmas was spent on a 15 hour flight to Singapore to meet my bf. While he's been working hard over the holidays, I've just been soaking up the Singapore lifestyle and exploring the city. It's nice to have some downtime after such a hectic past few months.

In Her Boutique: Vincent Park

I met Cara from Fashion Design School and we were the few lucky girls who went to London, England, for the design exchange program (a life-changing, mind-altering experience). I remember our sketchbooks would be bursting at the seams full of research material and images, but our design teacher, Zowie Broach, would always demand more.

Cara opened up Vincent Park with her sister 3 years ago and I've always wanted to stop by every time I was in Vancouver. It's a boutique on Main street with beautifully curated selection of clothing and accessories hung upon industrial drain pipes and vintage furniture. I wish my closet looked this nice.

Since everything is carefully edited, you can easily find pieces that are special and unique. If you're tired of the mass market fashion in the malls (like I am), this boutique is definitely a refreshing change and worth a visit.

Holiday Craft Fairs

For the past two weekends, I've been doing the Holiday Craft Fair circuit in Montreal. That would explain my absence from the blog. Let me tell you, I've been getting Craft Fair withdrawals. (Is that even a symptom?) I miss the ambience, friendly crafters, and the buzz of customers around my booth.

Puces Pop was 'poppin' with people on both days and Smart Design Mart was equally fun. Thank you to everyone who stopped by my booth. I met some great stylists, photographers and local bloggers at both shows.

Optical Illusions: Trompe l'oeil

Trompe l'oeil is the art of deception, perception and optical illusions to trick the eye.

People normally don't think of fashion designers as trompe l'oeil artists, (it's reserved for painters and graphic artists), but I can't help thinking that fashion designers are in this category too. We're often asked to make waists thinner, or a bust fuller with just a slight curvature of a design line or careful placement of seams. In a way, we are illusionists (the fashion industry did invent Vanity sizing and push-up bras).

I can't remember where I found these images, but they caught me off guard for just a second.

Halloween Inspiration: Birds of Prey

Posing with wild fowl is just another day in a model's life and Toni Garn makes it look so easy. Photographed by Greg Kadel for Numero, leather, lace, fur and feathers never looked so good together.

This Halloween weekend, I made some last minute costumes with what I had in my closet. I rocked a Vampy Goth costume the first night and then dug around in my closet for a puffy underskirt and leggings the next night. I managed to find a sparkly cat mask that I couldn't help but wear all night.

In her Closet: A Print Designer's Pad

Laura is like the girl that everyone wants to know. She works as a print designer, moonlights as an aspiring rapper on weekends, and writes on her blog, noeud noir. If you're lucky, you can catch her performing live at bars on St. Laurent.

We first met at "The Corporation" while working closely on print repeats, embroidery placements and re-colorations of patterns. I visited her desk a lot as we worked on about 8-12 prints each season (overkill with the prints if you ask me).

Her apartment is filled with purple, gold and black accents, very much the same palette as everything in her wardrobe. She has a treasured collection of vintage cameras passed on from her father who was a tailor and a professional photographer. He has left her with some incredible heirlooms, a vintage Rolleiflex and Rapid Omega that appear to be still functional. And sometimes her camera bag functions as her purse.

We took her bike out for a spin, but it was pretty windy outside and her brightly colored Marimekko print dress didn't exactly keep her warm. It did look good though.

There are a few things that I can't live without and one of them is sushi. It may be because I grew up in Vancouver and sushi shops were as abundant as convenient stores, but here in Montreal, good sushi is hard to find.

Visiting the Tsukiji Fish markets in Japan is hardly fashionable, but you definitely won't find fish that is fresher. Eating sushi-on-a-stick is unheard of in North America and seeing a guy hack up a chunk of Bluefin Tuna is as authentic as it gets.

I miss this stuff. Bad.

Vintage Lingerie and Corsets

Inspiration can come from anywhere, but most of the time, it comes from my lingerie drawer (most I have never worn). Too pretty or delicate to wear, I collect them for sources of inspiration. I'm like that with shoes too.

I have yet to add Vintage Corsets and Support braces from the 1920's to my collection, but they fascinate me in a completely different way. They are loaded with such history, I am curious as to who has worn them and under what types of dress.

They seem to tell a story of their own.

Highlights from Spring Fashion Week 2012

Spring 2012 has returned with embellishment and exquisite detailing that create new textural patterns and forms of fabrication. And no, studs and neon do not seem to be leaving us any time soon.

Though I left my design job last year, normally this time we would be collecting images from the Spring shows, creating boards, and figuring out which trends were the strongest for our department.

I guess it's out of habit I am still doing this, but I also love saving the images to my sketchbook.

While walking through the lesser known pathways in Venice, we stumbled along canals filled with colorful laundry, airing out to dry on clothesline. These photos were taken from my backpacking trip in Italy from 2005, but they are still an inspiration to look at now.

Last week I was prepping for my photoshoot for the new Love at First Blush collection. I was running around in the rain, picking up some high heels and last minute supplies for my styling kit. I always bring a package of double-sided garment tape, clips and pins to cinch in waists, style the clothes on the model and prep for any wardrobe malfunctions.

Even though it's not my first photoshoot, I always get anxious the day before. It was a great team and an amazing photoshoot. Here are a few behind the scene shots from Friday's shoot.

Collection Update: Meet Judy

For the past few months, I've been laboriously working away at my new collection. I'm excited to be adding a few pieces of clothing to compliment the Love at First Blush accessory line.

Ever since I inked down these designs, I've been tweaking and editing every look. They've changed somewhat from the initial ideas to when I've draped each pattern on the Judy form. The fun part now is scouting a Montreal Fashion photographer to capture the vision that's been floating in my head.

I wish I was in New York right now, but I've been following New York fashion week online. NYFW was covered in neon brights, with each designer courting a different shade of florescent yellow and orange. We'll be seeing neon again in spring 2012, from allover head-to-toe highlighter hues or as a small detail trim.

Not Nearly Naked: Jean Paul Gaultier Exhibit Part 2

It's possible that Jean Paul Gaultier may have been the first inventor of the "Innerwear as Outerwear" trend. His interpretation is cheeky and quite literal with beaded faux nipples and embellished private bits. Yes you heard me! (see last photo). He must have asked himself "Why go naked when you can dress like you're naked?"

Another outfit looked like it came straight from the Body Worlds exhibit, or perhaps, was the inspiration to Lady Gaga's meat dress. Made from red fringe, lacing and screen-printed panty hose, the garment is an embodiment of the muscular human form.

I also enjoyed the numerous illustrations for Madonna's Blond Ambition Tour and costumes for the Fifth Element, which I should have taken more photos of. The exhibit left me wanting to buy a souvenir, but I couldn't justify $150 for a teddy bear in a striped shirt.

Jumping at the Bit: Leather Harnesses

As of late, I can't stop infatuating over bondage elements such as leather harnesses and spiky hardware. This is probably from looking at the corsets, leather straps and cone bras at the Jean Paul Gaultier exhibit, or maybe the trend is finally getting to me now.

Harnesses made in different shades of pastel are more my style, like the floral embellished bras in ID magazine's spring 2011 editorial. They're feminine and less S&M. Do you love it or hate it?

I've wanted to stud almost everything I own after seeing the insanely decked out Burberry trench coat covered in spikes. Over the past year, studs have been showing up on high heels, leather jackets, corsets and now, even on the soles of your shoes. Are you over the spike and stud craze yet? I'm definitely not.

Up Close and Intimate at Jean Paul Gaultier's exhibit

I was a little too 'snap happy' at the Jean Paul Gaultier exhibit at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, so I have decided to divide this into two parts. It was the perfect opportunity to practice my photography skills and capture fashion on still models, so I have over a hundred photos.

Already having seen the Alexander Mcqueen exhibit at the MET, I felt a bit spoiled. I was incredibly impressed with the thoughtful presentation from Mcqueen's exhibit and the high caliber of work, I wondered how JPG's exhibit could push the bar.

Well, it did and it didn't.

First of all, JPG is not my favorite designer, but I had to see his work because of his influence on fashion and his contribution to many iconic looks (ie. Maddona's cone bra). I thoroughly enjoyed the presentation of the talking mannequins and the rotating models which brought some humor and life to the clothes, but I I also found JGP's interpretation of themes just too literal. His workmanship is no doubt extraordinarily detailed and impressive to see up close, but somehow, it lacks the beauty of refinement.

Overall, I enjoyed the exhibit and it definitely is a must-see if you are in Montreal. I walked away feeling inspired and amazed. Stay tuned for Part two.

I have to admit, I used to own a tv that only had four viewable channels. As a fashion student, I didn't have the luxury of owning cable, most of my cash went to buying sample yardage, thread, textbooks and feeding my never ending addiction to Vogue and Surface magazines.

Now that I have cable, HBO has been my favorite channel and I've been following True Blood fanatically. I've watched it from the very first season and I've been hooked ever since. Last November, our cuffs were ordered by the True Blood costume department and I've been eager to watch Season 4 just see if they have made it onscreen.

Montreal Vintage Shopping: Digging for Treasure

Last weekend, I went vintage shopping with some friends who were visiting from Winnipeg. We spent the whole day searching for the perfect vintage treasures along St. Laurent street.

The most memorable store was Eva B, where its a sensory overload full of clothes, mannequins and bras hanging from the ceiling, and a $1 bin of clothing where you literally just have to dig around. It's a mountainous heap of clothing, and if you're ready to get your hands dirty, it's quite a thrill to find something for one dollar. Though at times it feels like searching for a needle in the haystack.

Everything is reasonably priced and the store is quite large, so you could spend a lot of time here. In the end, my friends walked away with a bag full of clothes.

In her Closet: A Shoe Designer's Wardrobe

I first met Sun at the "Fashion Corporation" about 3 years ago. We shared an office and she assisted in my department for about two weeks until she was moved to the denim department. We shared a communal candy jar that we couldn't manage to keep full and she would tell me about her crazy internet dating stories. Of course, I did have to warn her not to ever jump into some stranger's white van, but that is another story for later.

Fast forward 2 years, and she now works as a shoe designer in Montreal and has a beautiful apartment in the Côte-des-Neiges area that is influenced by her Korean roots and her Mexican boyfriend. She has hoarded a collection of towering black heels and a colorful wardrobe mixed with a bit of vintage to clothes she has collected from places she has visited.

She also handmade her portfolio book which she showed me. Future aspiring fashion designers take note, her portfolio is immaculately made, well presented and professional.

When Jeff of Sugar Rock Catwalk asked if I had outfit photos of my accessories for his blog, I immediately planned a few impromptu photo shoots. Customers often wonder what to wear with the cuffs and I thought these outfit posts would be helpful and beneficial for the shop.

I paired a black and white paint speckled dress with a black leather waist cincher and black leather ankle heels. Keeping the outfit simple makes the cuff the focus of the outfit. I'm also wearing red lipstick from Sephora which I've been wearing religiously.

Wanderlust: Thailand

I wish I had spent more time traveling the remote areas of South East Asia discovering the Silk Road path and the many colorful fabric markets the region has to offer. One reason is because fabric makes me giddy and weak to the knees and two, because I am a bit jealous of the photos my bf is sending me from Bangkok. Apart from his stint in Singapore, he has been taking side trips to a different city on the weekend.

This is just a typical Sunday afternoon in Chatuchak market, one of Bangkok's largest markets boasting over 8,000 stalls. You really could get lost. The heart of the silk industry in Thailand is located in Khorat. One day I will have to visit, but for now I just have these photos.

I just pre-ordered a limited edition Fashionary in Magenta! My friend Mel from the blog Mode.Mange.Musique was carrying one the other day and I just had to have one.

If you haven't heard of it, it's a sketchbook and fashion dictionary complete with female croquis templates, making brainstorming and sketching more streamlined. It's like a moleskin, but a whole lot cooler. Where was this when I was in fashion design school? I can't wait to get mine!

New York makes me feel alive. There's just so much happening in such a condensed city, it's equally stimulating and exhilarating. My all time favorite places to check out are Soho, Bleecker Street, Brooklyn, and of course, Broadway for the odd musical and show.

We saw the musical "How to Succeed in Business" featuring Daniel Radcliffe (that guy from Harry Potter), by scoring lottery tickets in the morning when the theater just opened. It saved us a ton of money, but only gave us more reason to shop.

Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty at the MET

I was in New York City last week with my sister to see the Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty exhibit at the MET. Though you could barely move through the galleries as the museum was packed with so many people, the exhibit is a must see.

The clothing was beautifully displayed along with video installations from some of his best and most experimental seasons, including the chess inspired collection "It's Only A Game," the box within a box "Voss" collection, and his last realized collection "Plato's Atlantis." After years of just imagining what his garments looked like, I could finally examine the embroideries, textures and workmanship up close. It is absolutely pure genius. One dress was made from medical slides dyed red.

The highlight of the exhibition is definitely the ethereal hologram of Kate Moss from the "Widows of Culloden" collection, played to the melody of Schindler's List.

I met Candice through Mel as they are both roommates and friends since fashion school. Candice is a natural red head and her room is full of cool and clean blue hues. She also works for a large fashion retailer as a designer and principal product developer. Her collection of vintage shoes is extensive but you'll have to see that for yourself.

Brooklyn Renegade Craft Fair

Since the weather looked promising and we were in the neighborhood, we wandered over to the Brooklyn Renegade Craft Fair in Williamsburg on Sunday. There was an overwhelming amount of vendors lining Mcarren Park with cute jewelry, ceramics and screen printed shirts.

I did manage to find myself in the food area as I have a slight weakness for sweets. I couldn't resist the frozen yogurt served from the mobile food truck called Joyride.

After being in Williamsburg for just a few hours, I had the strange urge to buy a small cute dog and get a stenciled arm tattoo as everyone seemed to have one or the other or both!

Last Friday, I was whisked away on a surprise trip to New York City to celebrate our anniversary. We were lucky enough to get upgraded to this fancy suite with a private balcony and the most amazing view of New York.

We barely had time to enjoy it as we were busy exploring the city, eating a delicious dinner at L'ecole and catching a performance at the New York City Ballet. I love New York and I will be back again for a planned visit to see the Alexander McQueen exhibition at the Met.

Most of my friends in the fashion industry have such creative spaces and closets full of... well, clothes. I've started a new series that looks at the inner workings of my friend's closet spaces and also, creative spaces. Let me know how you like the series!

Going to fashion school with JI, I have always admired her illustrations for it's quirky factor. We've been friends since our very first year down to our graduating collections together. Sometimes we had to pull all-nighters in the lab to finish our collections, but we would always finish on time.

Last week I wrote up some answers to a few interview questions I did for an online magazine. It was a very self reflective exercise which allowed me to question my own motives.

I design because I am passionate about fashion, but the heart of it really comes down to one thing; All of this is to share my vision with others, to reproduce the imagery I envision and to hopefully inspire others.

The vision I created for my graduating collection, entitled Sacré Coeur, was inspired by the Church in Paris, representing the contrast between light and dark, the sacred and the sinful. With the use of distressed leathers, and the airiest silk chiffon, I wanted to create a sense of drama between the fabrics. The raw edges of the fabric and the couture refinement of the embellishment also add to the contrasting elements.

This is what I love to do. This is why I love fashion.

A Trip to my Favorite Leather Store

A trip to my leather supplier is like walking into a bright large candy store. There's over 1000 square feet of printed, metallic, patent, and colored skins in every different animal you can think of. Sometimes it feels a little claustrophobic as the aisles are tight and I fear that a huge roll of cowhide will fall onto me.

I picked out a few different leather skins, but I was very tempted to buy more.

I've included the Selby's video of Mitch Alfus, one of New York's leather kings, as I thought it was fitting for this post. It's simply touching and wonderfully documented. If you have ten minutes to spare, you should watch it.

Inside an Artist's sketchbook: The Creative Process

How designs come to fruition really start with the sketchbook. I come up with about ten or twenty sketches before I can decide on one idea. But it doesn't really stop there, as ideas change or need to be modified as I make up a sample. Sometimes sketches aren't physically possible to recreate, but the challenge to find a solution is the most rewarding part of the process.

A look inside any designer's sketchbook (if they allow to show you), is a private exploration of their thoughts, ideas and a glimpse of the illusive creative process. I stumbled upon Camila Do Rosario's illustrations; a page in her sketchbook is just as lovely as her final works of art.

En pointe: Ballerina Photo Shoot

These are the final photos from the Ballerina Photo Shoot. The second outfit I chose for this shoot is a gown I designed in my second year of Ryerson, inspired by Edgar Degas' impressionistic ballerina paintings and the lovely ballerinas that spin inside of a musical box. It was the perfect dress for this shoot and the full paneled circle skirt worked well to capture and emphasize the ballerina in motion. She was attacking the pirouettes like Nina in the Black Swan.

Sneak Peeks from 'The Ballerina Photo Shoot'

Here is one of the photos from the Ballerina photo shoot I styled two weeks ago. I decided at the last minute to style this shoot as I had the perfect gowns from my collection for the Ballerina in Motion concept.

Everyone was speaking 3 languages that day, Russian, French and English, it was a completely multicultural moment! We played around with an industrial fan to make the skirt look windswept. I took a few detail shots of my garments; the corset is all hand beaded oyster shells, beads, semi-precious stones, Swarovski crystals and took me about 3 weeks to complete. The skirt has layers and layers of ivory raw silk chiffon.

Custom Leather Cuff: Sophie's Design

I always enjoy receiving customs orders and I recently finished an order for a client, a pair of cuffs that extend all the way to the elbow.

The concept: Her name translates into Ishtar, which is a Babylonian goddess of love, war and fertility, the symbol being a seven pillared mandala. I used the mandala as the focal point of the piece with circular elements to compliment and reference the moon, the goddess and femininity.

They turned out more beautiful than I imagined and I will be planning to add longer cuffs to my shop.

Shopping in Singapore: Haji Lane

I found out about Haji Lane only after returning from my trip to Singapore. Much to my disappointment, I missed out shopping a fashion paradise full of independent boutiques, vintage goods, and local designers. Much of the charm is in the colorful buildings that line the tiny and narrow back-alley street.

I was lucky enough that my bf went back last week for a short trip and took a few photos. I live vicariously through his photos and commentary, and can only imagine the vibrant, eclectic street.

theblogshop: Most definitely the cutest name of a boutique, complete with their own fashion blog.

He brought me back this ring from a boutique called Pluck which reminded him of the cut out work on my leather cuffs. He was probably drawn more to the ice cream parlor inside the shop than the actual women's clothing, but much to his credit, he also mentioned it was one of the best shops on the street.

Learning How to Use my DSLR

Ever since I inherited my Nikon DSLR, it has been a huge learning curve. I would pick up my camera, fumble around with the functions, then set it to Auto for the camera to decide my settings.

Though I could learn much of the information online, I decided it would be helpful to take a class.
It's my second class I'm taking at Concordia University; a Product Photography class which will immensely help with photos from my Etsy shop. We've been bringing our own products to shoot each week and working with 3 different lighting set-ups. It's been fun to use professional studio lighting and equipment that I normally don't have access to.

Behind the Scenes: The Ballerina Photo Shoot

I haven't been able to update frequently as I'd like to, as I've been caught in a whirlwind of custom orders, mini projects and assignments. Last week, we received a surprise rush order from a costume department filming a blockbuster movie in Germany. If we're lucky, we may see our cuffs in 3-D!

This weekend, I helped style a photo shoot inspired by the Ballerina in Motion images found here. I clicked a few behind the scenes shot of the magic in action. The model is a classically trained ballerina and she was extremely flexible, creating some really amazing poses. I'll post the final pictures when they are ready.

These are beautiful and stylistic fashion illustrations by Meo, who is located in Thailand. I love the way she draws the different textures of hair with the use of colored pencil and watercolor. She also makes scarves from her prints and has a lovely blog.

I've been a fan of Renata Morales ever since I moved to Montreal. She's a Mexican-born designer based in Montreal who beautifully manipulates fabrics into embellished dresses, draping explosions of pleated folds and detailed braiding. Her Spring/Summer 2011 collection is refreshingly soft and alluring.

Photo Shoot: Love at First Blush

So here it is! These are the final results from my hours of planning and my first time using studio lighting. The lovely models were my friends, Melanie, Laura, and Anushka. All the girls are from different cultural backgrounds that made the photos more interesting, allowing me to showcase the range of colors of my cuffs.

I found it challenging to meter on the different skin tones of each model. If I were to do this again, I would pre-set the camera to capture each skin tone, then combine the three layers in Photoshop. A lot of post-process work!

I definitely learned how to use my DSLR more comfortably, but I still have a lot to learn.

Behind the Scenes: Photo Shoot

Sunday was the big photo shoot day and I was happy that all my models showed up!

I was counting on a sunny day for natural light, but unfortunately the weather prediction was cloudy and overcast. This meant I had to rent lighting which would add another layer of complexity. I rented a few items that would create a simple set up in my apartment; a strobe light, an umbrella, a reflector, and a stand.

We had a ton of shoes and clothes to pull outfits from as each of the models brought some of their own. The outfits were an array of cosmetic pale pinks, silky greys and dusty nudes.

Each model had a unique style and look to the shoot, but it worked together cohesively.
I'm now busy editing the photos for my presentation on Wednesday. I can't wait to show you the final pictures.

Photo Shoot Planning

This week, I'm currently working on a photo shoot concept for my Photography class. I've worked on shoots before, but only as a stylist. This time, I'll be behind the lens taking the photos.

In any photo shoot, you will need some models. I've asked some of my friends to participate and luckily they're part of the fashion crowd so they love to do this sort of stuff. You'll also need a makeup artist, props that will add to the concept, and of course, the clothing or accessories you will be shooting. (I'll be choosing some new accessories from my shop to photograph).

I've pulled together some ideas for posing and lighting, but most of the fun will be from the spontaneity of the shoot. The image I found here captures the feeling and mood I would like to emulate, but we'll see what we end up with!

Feathered Frenzy

I've been quite busy the past few days. Along with just trying to keep up with the sudden supply and demand from my shop, I've been running around doing some photography assignments.

However, I've found another website to keep me procrastinating for hours. The site is called Pinterest and you can easily scroll through a mash up of inspirational images. My current obsessions and infatuations are feathers that come in all forms of wearable clothing and accessories.

Ballerinas in Motion

Black Swan already has everyone talking, thinking or taking a ballet class, and I'm predicting they'll pick up more than their share of Oscars this Sunday, (which I'll be watching and rooting for Natalie).

I always find ballerina photo shoots look a bit contrived, but this one is quite literally floor sweeping.
London based photographer, Jan Masny has captured the motion and grace of the gestures and arabesques of these dynamic balllerinas. It almost makes me want to put on some ballet shoes and.... err.. on second thought, it might just end up very badly.

Treasures from the Earth: Rare Gem Finds

My current infatuations are chunky crystals formed by the earth's terrain; Raw gems and slices of the earth that have been untouched and harvested from the planet's core made into dangling necklaces and bold statement rings, each of them unique in colour and texture. No two are alike.

There seems to be a lot of new stores popping up on Etsy with these gems and I recently caved in and bought one..

Marchesa's Muse

I think I might have died and gone to heaven after laying my eyes on the Marchesa Fall 2011 collection. Chantilly lace, rose cuffs, beaded lace, sheer silk tulle, inspired by Miss Havisham from Great Expectations. I'm loving Vogue's close-up detail shots.

Preen Flashbacks and Adrenaline Rushes

While I was on exchange in London during my days in Fashion School, (which feels like lifetimes ago), I had the opportunity to intern for the lovely design house, Preen. I was asked to do some light sewing, prepare samples, and hand stitching in labels/buttons (oh so glamorous!) but I was secretly hoping to be asked to dress for their London Fashion show.

It's exhilarating to be a dresser backstage. There's always a model searching for a lost shoe or a missing earring and a make up artist standing by to apply last minute touch-ups. And just when the show starts, your model is coming back for the second outfit, your adrenaline kicks in and you're frantically zipping up that dress on her skinny frame. You then madly rush her back in line again to stomp down that runway, cool and confident.

Their look has definitely evolved over the seasons, and has grown up in way. I love what Justin Thornton and Thea Bregazzi have done with their Fall 2011 collection. There's a real emphasis on simple silhouettes and sophisticated styling with punchy geometric prints, hand beaded tops, and simple shift dresses with a touch of hand craft.
